ours after BJP leader H Raja on social media said that after razing of the statue of Lenin in Tripura it was the turn of Periyar statues in Tamil Nadu, a statue of Periyar was razed near Tiruppattur Municipal Corporation in Vellore,Tamil Nadu.
The incident took place around 9 pm. Sources said that the statue of EVR Ramaswamy fondly known as Periyar was battered and the police have arrested two persons in connection with the vandalism.
Sources have said that two persons – BJP town general secretary Muthukumaran and another person identified as Francis – broke the statue using a hammer. Police has deployed security at the spot.
Raja’s verified Facebook page had a post where he asked who Lenin was and what his relevance in India was.
“Who is Lenin? What is the reverence he holds in India? What is the link between communalism and India? Lenin’s statues were destroyed in Tripura, tomorrow, in Tamil Nadu, casteist Periyar’s statues will be destroyed,” read Raja’s Facebook post.
Raja’s post was subjected to harsh criticism, following which it was removed from the page.
Following the post, DMK working president MK Stalin today demanded arrest of the BJP national leader under the Goondas Act for his remarks. Stalin also said that no one can dare touch Periyar’s statue in Tamil Nadu.
