I’m a common worker of the party and will always remain a common worker of the party.”With these words, the Congress MP Jyotiradiya Scindia sought to dismiss the notions that he was the chief ministerial face for the state of Madhya Pradesh in light of the 2018 assembly elections.
Scindia during the run up the two by elections in the state and on several other occasions has been reportedly backing the idea of projecting a chief ministerial face in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the state assembly elections that are due by end of this year. Scindia had converted the Mungawali and Kolaras by-elections into a Shivraj versus Scindia battle and slogans like ‘ab ki baar Scindia sarkar’ were plastered on walls in the two constituencies.
Recently, Scindia has said that, “In my view, a chief minister’s face should be projected in the state. I am ready to shoulder any responsibility the party gives me”
While addressing a press conference in Bhopal, he responded to a pointed question in this regard. He seemed to suggest that the CM face should be projected in each state in the country.
“As far as the issue of projection of a chief ministerial face is concerned the Congress party and other parties have different strategies in different states. As far as my views are concerned they are for the national level. As far as the state of Madhya Pradesh is concerned the High command the general secretaries will decide. I was a common worker of the party, I’m a common worker of the party and will always remain a common worker of the party,” said Scindia.
It is unlikely that Congress will project a chief ministerial face in MP as it may lead to infighting in the state unit.
Scindia has rubbished claims by the BJP that the party was successful in reducing Congress’s winning margin in the bypolls.
“The entire cabinet was in Mungawali and Kolaras for several months, the government was not functioning at all. Everyone knows the way they poured in money during the last three days. A car full of currency notes was caught and the police helped the BJP candidate escape along with the money while the Congress candidate was attacked. In all the BJP put in whatever they could but still they could not win the elections,” he said.
Scindia praised the ECI for being objective and taking pro active steps to check unfair means.
Scindia said that the Congress would come out with a vision document that would contain what the party would do for various sections such as women, SCs, STs and youth. “we believe in promising less and delivering more,” he said.
On the issue of a possible tie up with the BSP, Scindia said that while no final decision has been taken on it as yet, but the need of the hour was for all like minded groups to come together.
